Our Safety Program

An incident-free workplace is Devcon Inc.'s goal. Thus, we are committed to a strong Health and Safety Program that protects our staff, property and the public from incidents. Our management is committed to providing the proper equipment, training, policies, practices and procedures to ensure tasks are carried out safely and efficiently. Our safety program is continually developing and reviewed in order to enhance its effectiveness within an ever-changing earthworks industry.

Certificate of Recognition

Devcon Inc. has held a valid Certificate of Recognition (COR), as of 2014. Prior to this, Devcon Inc. held a Small Employer Certificate of Recognition (SECOR). COR certifications are issued by a Certifying Partner in conjunction with the Government of Alberta, and confirm that Devcon Inc.'s Health and Safety Program has been evaluated by an external auditor, and meets or exceeds the safety standards as set out by Provincial OH&S legislation.

hazard Assessments

Devcon Inc.'s health and safety management system is designed to identify, assess and control occupational hazards in the work place. The following hazard assessment formats are used by Devcon Inc. to ensure all hazards are being identified and controlled:

  1. Job Hazard Analysis - JHA's have been performed to recognize and reduce the hazards associated with the main tasks within the scope of the company.

  2. Pre-Project Hazard Assessments are completed before the commencement of any job.

  3. Field Level Hazard Assessments - FLHA's are conducted for each job on an on-going basis or as conditions change and new hazards are introduced.

Safety Meetings

The safety meeting is the primary vehicle for ongoing awareness and the exchange of safety information. Such meetings, are referred to as Toolbox Meetings and involve workers, supervisors and management. Toolbox meetings occur on a weekly basis, and address site-specific hazards that may exist, as well as any reported incidents or planned inspections that may have occurred, including the status of corrective actions. Additionally, a presentation of the weekly safety topic is put forth by the Safety Coordinator. This meeting is also a great opportunity for workers to voice any comments or concerns that they may have.

Devcon Inc. takes its corporate social responsibility seriously. We recognize that our earthworks projects often help build stronger community infrastructure, therefore, we always operate with the best interest of the communities in which we work.

Devcon Inc. takes considerable care to isolate our worksites, ensuring community members are not exposed to any hazards arising from our operations. We feel it is important to build a relationship with the community, and ensure awareness of the happenings of the project in hopes to lessen the impact on their day-to-day lives. Setting a good example for those we employ, the communities of which we operate and the clients we do business for is crucial to us. Thereby, we maintain a commitment to continually conduct business in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner.

  • Incorporating Spill Contingency Plans and ECO (Environmental Construction Operations) Plans into our project planning and execution.

  • Educating workers as to Devcon Inc.'s Environmental Policy and topics surrounding site-specific environmental concerns.
